A baked Camembert is one of the easiest things to bring out with very little time, notice or effort and Maple Pecan Baked Camembert is just the show-stopper to enjoy in the colder months, particularly around the holidays. All you need are a few ingredients you likely have around your kitchen already, a wheel of cheese and some fresh bread – it’s so easy!

While I often love a super savoury and simple baked Camembert, the sweetness of maple in this recipe is just perfect alongside the cheese. The pecans add a lovely crunch and a tiny kick of chilli & salt balances it all out. This really is a superstar recipe to bring out at your next gathering or you could be selfish and just make it for the next time you stay in with a glass of wine for an evening. It’s delicious either way!

Some of the maple syrup and oil mixture will run over, but that’s ok. You can dip the bread around the sides for a hit of sweet maple or you can also spoon some of it over the top of the cheese as needed. It’s. a little messy I’ll admit, but trust me – it’s so good!

When choosing a cheese, it really is up to you. I just buy the normal Le Rustique Camembert from the grocery that you see everywhere and it’s not at all expensive. If you want to buy something a bit more upmarket you absolutely can, but it’s not necessary to spend loads to enjoy this delicious cheese dish. As for the syrup, you really do want to use genuine maple syrup and fresh bakery bread like a sourdough, baguette or a rustic country loaf would be my choice for serving alongside.

You need some kind of oven to table dish you can bake your Camembert in – something oven-proof and small. I normally look for something like a small enamel pie dish or in these photos it’s a small frying pan by Kapka Enamel that I found on Sous Chef.

Ingredients

  • 250g wheel of Camembert
  • 50ml maple syrup
  • 50ml olive oil
  • Pinch of dried chilli flakes
  • Pinch of sea salt flakes
  • A good handful of pecan halves, finely chopped
  • Bread to serve

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C / 160° Fan / 350°F.
  2. Open the wheel of Camembert and gently shave off the rind on one side to expose the gooey cheese inside just on the top and place it back into the box. Place the box inside the lid to reinforce it and place it in a small, oven-proof dish or small enamel pie dish.
  3. Add the maple syrup, olive oil, chilli flakes and sea salt in a jug and whisk lightly to combine. Stir in the pecans and pour the whole lot over the camembert in the dish.
  4. While the Camembert is baking, slice up some bread into small dippers. Serve the cheese hot with the bread dippers on the side.
