Sex on the Beach

Sex on the beach cocktail in front of a white background showing the layers of orange into red, garnished with a paper cocktail umbrella stabbed into 3 marachino cocktail cherries

When I think about the drink that reminds me most of my days at college, it has to be the Sex on the Beach. I drank many of these beautiful but dangerous cocktails while I was at University of Miami, I think primarily because it was the only cocktail I knew the name of when it came time to order and for that I owe a great debt to the movie Cocktail. I still love the sense memory evoked by this gorgeous peachy cocktail and it’s perfect to drink in summertime!

I’ve given the measurements in parts here because I find it easier to make cocktails that way – I simply measure everything into a shot measurement that came with my cocktail shaker and do either 1, 2 or 3 shots of each ingredient depending on the recipe. It’s best to make this cocktail one at time rather in batches in order to get that gorgeous sunset horizon in the glass.

It’s not terribly difficult to make a Sex on the Beach and if I’m honest, it’s a little too easy to drink! Of course there are many variations, but this is how I make mine, so get your lawn chairs ready, call your friends and enjoy a sunny cocktail hour in the garden!

Ingredients

  • 3 parts orange juice
  • 1 part peach schnapps
  • 3 parts cranberry juice
  • 2 parts vodka
  • A splash of Chambord
  • Cocktail cherries (maraschino cherries) to garnish

Method

  1. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add 3 parts orange juice and 1 part peach schnapps. Shake well and strain into glass filled with ice.
  2. Now add 3 parts cranberry juice and 2 parts vodka to the same cocktail shaker and again, shake very well. Use the back of a normal spoon and while straining, pour the cranberry mixture slowly and gently over the back of the spoon into the cocktail. This will help the red mixture not to land to heavily on the orange mixture and help it to float on top.
  3. Gently add a splash of Chambord and garnish with 2 or 3 cocktail cherries or maraschino cherries which can either be just tossed in or skewered with a cocktail pick or a paper umbrella.
