Halloween Marshmallow Pops

Halloween is a fun time of year and I can never resist any excuse to be festive! I wanted to put together something cute for some friends of mine and a few of my friends’ kids at the start of Autumn and I decided these Halloween Marshmallow Pops would be perfect. They’re also pretty great for Autumn bake sales, school events, October birthday parties or Halloween parties!

This isn’t a recipe per-say because measurements and amounts will depend on how many pops you want to make and also the size of your marshmallows, etc. You might decide to make only 5 or 6 pops or you might decide to make enough for your child’s whole school. So plan accordingly and buy enough supplies. The candy melts you use will also vary. Some brands melt thinner than others and occasionally you might seize it while melting. My rule of thumb is to always order or buy much more than I think I’ll need and then have some leftover for another project later or return the unopened leftovers if that’s an option.

You will need a few things to make these including a couple of food safe paint brushes which you can normally find anywhere that sells cake decorating supplies or at most craft stores. Lollipop sticks can typicially also be found in these places as well as treat bags for wrapping up your Halloween Marshmallow pops. Anything you struggle to find will likely be available online.

Ingredients

  • Giant toasting marshmallows
  • Lollipop sticks
  • Candy Melts in green, orange and black
  • Pretzel sticks
  • Edible eyes
  • Cellophane treat bags to wrap the pops (optional)
  • Red sugar marker (optional)

Method

Jack-O-Lantern Pops

  1. Line a baking sheet with non-stick baking paper or waxed paper.
  2. Prepare the pops by sticking a lollipop stick into the side of the marshmallow. You might need to twist it to get it to work through the sticky, gooey marshmallow. Choose the side of the marshmallow that will give you a shape that looks most like a pumpkin. I typically use my marshmallow sideways because to me this looks more like a pumpkin shape. Place them on the baking paper lined tray.
  3. Use a bit of a salted pretzel stick to make the stem of the pumpkin. Again, twist it and work it into the top of the marshmallow.
  4. Now it’s time to melt your candy melts. Prepare them according to package instructions. You will need all three colours: Orange, Black & Green.
  5. Dip the pops into the orange candy melts and place them on the baking sheet lined with the baking paper to dry.
  6. When the orange candy has dried and hardened, paint the stems with the green candy melts using a food safe paint brush.
  7. Now you can paint on the Jack-O-Lantern faces using a food safe paint brush and the black candy melts. If your brush gets clunky, simply hold it under a tap running hot water to melt off the extra chocolate and start again.

Frankenstein Pops

  1. Line a baking sheet with non-stick baking paper or waxed paper.
  2. Prepare the Pops by sticking a lollipop stick into the marshmallow lengthwise so that it resembles the long head of a Frankenstein.
  3. Use two small ends of the pretzel sticks to work into the bottom of the marshmallow on either side of the stick to be the neck bolts.
  4. Make sure the candy melts are fully melted. You will need green and black only.
  5. Dip the pops into the green and pop them onto your paper lined tray upside down to dry.
  6. When all the green dipping has been done and the pops are dry, dip only the ends shallowly into the black to make the hair. Pop the lollies upside down again on tray to dry, black side down.
  7. To make the faces, use some of the green candy melt to stick the eyeballs onto the pops like glue. Then use the paintbrush again to draw a squiggly mouth with the black melt. You can also use the black to paint over the neck bolts. If you’re using the red sugar marker, you can make a stitch wound on the side – this is optional. Again, if the paint brush is clumpy, run it under the hot tap to remove the dried candy melt clumps.

Leave all your pops to dry for 30 minutes to an hour before wrapping them just to be on the safe side.

Store the pops in an airtight container or wrap them individually with upside down cellophane treat bags. You can use cute, festive ribbons to secure the bags and stickers to decorate them if you like.
